Boss demands 24/7 "urgent" access to employee, interrupting the employee's evenings and weekends with tasks that could have waited: 'If I’m not answering emails at 10PM, I’ll wake up to passive aggressive messages'

I've been at this job for a little over a year and my boss has zero respect for boundaries. If I'm not answering emails at 10PM, I'll wake up to passive aggressive messages like "Did you see this?" or "Why wasn't this handled last night?" It's not life or death stuff either,
  • just things that could easily wait until the morning. The worst was last weekend. I was finally relaxing after a long week, sitting on the couch scrolling through tiktok when he called me three separate times over something that ended up being a typo on an internal document. Completely ruined the night.
  • I get that work can be demanding, but I'm not on call, and my contract doesn't say anything about nights or weekends. I'm tired of feeling like I can't even have a normal life outside of work because my boss thinks every small task is a fire.

  • Anyone else dealt with this kind of "everything is urgent" boss? Did you set boundaries that actually stuck, or did you just end up leaving?

  • mytoesarechilly If it's so urgent that you're expected to be on call, you need to be paid as on call.

  • Escaril Set and out of office message that states your working hours, and you will get back to them at the earliest time possible, however, if it is urgent, to contact your boss who is on call 24/7, and provide their contact details. Edit: When your boss flips out about at it being said they are on call 24/7, they may understand where you are coming from.
  • Eirwel I have a boss like this. Repeat after me: if everything is urgent then nothing is urgent. If you don't work in ER, then nothing is so urgent that it needs your attention during the off days. Ignore calls or block his number out of work hours. Protect your boundaries.
